London Fashion Week | Alexander McQueen AW15

Redken Global Creative Director Guido utilized hair accessories to create a punky romantic look at the Alexander McQueen Fall/Winter 2016 show.

“I had the idea of eclecticism for the Alexander McQueen show. It’s kind of romantic because it has soft features, which we created by pulling pieces out. But there’s also a randomness and wrongness to it, which makes it punky. I’m a big fan of hair accessories – they can be vintage and don’t need to be expensive. The more eccentric the look is, the more style it has. There’s sometimes no rhyme or reason to the look, it’s just about your own interpretation. With this look, the clunkier it is, the better it is and the more you worry about it, the more wrong it looks. I used Guts 10 to create a rough texture and then brushed it through and twisted hair into a wrap. I added shine with Redken Shine Flash 02, then took trays of jewelry and randomly placed pieces of varying sizes throughout the hair. This look created a self-assured, eccentric kind of McQueen woman.” – Guido

  1. Wash and dry hair using All Soft shampoo and conditioner. On damp hair, apply Guts 10 volume spray foam to roots. Rough dry hair using hands.
  2. Once dry, create a messy middle part using fingers. Liberally spray Wind Blown 05 dry texturizing spray throughout and brush through.
  3. Divide hair into two even sections in the back. Cross one section underneath the other, pulling toward the crown and ensuring that the hair follows along the hairline. Secure section flat against the head using several pins, leaving the ends loose, stiff and placed at the middle of the crown.
  4. Repeat the same process on the other side of the head with the remaining half of hair, ensuring the end meets the other end at the middle crown.
  5. Secure a hair accessory to the front side of head with pins. Randomly place 2-3 other hair accessories of varying sizes throughout.
  6. Wet fingers with water and gently pull the ends, and sides of hairline, to create a slightly messy and haphazard look. Finish by misting Shine Flash 02 glistening mist throughout for added shine.

London Fashion Week |Christopher Kane AW15

Redken Global Creative Director Guido gave models boyish, razor-cut fringes at the Christopher Kane Fall/Winter 2016 show.

“This look is kind of “bad girl” hair. We put extensions in the girls’ hair and gave them an out grown fringe that’s in the girls’ faces which instantly gives you a tough kind of girl. She’s rebellious and Christopher Kane always loves a rawness to his beauty. The hair is a juxtaposition to the beautiful clothes, which creates a yin and yang effect. Several of the girls also wore plastic head scarfs, which gave an eclectic, strange idea. It is a classic shape but made of plastic so again, I’m playing with high and low. It looks beautifully done in Kane’s way. I used Redken Diamond Oil High Shine to create the shine and Pure Force 20 hairspray to create some hold, as well as bobby pins for shape. The end look is very raw, tough and boyish.”  – Guido

  1. Starting with damp hair, smooth Redken Align 12 through mid-lengths and ends to discipline and control hair. Rough dry with fingers.
  2. Once the hair is dry, create a clean middle part. Take one-inch sections on either side of the part and pull tightly behind the ears, securing flat to head with pins underneath the hair at the nape of the neck.
  3. Apply 2-3 hair extensions that match your existing color to the hairline, with hair extensions covering face. Using a razor, trim lengths of hair to create an edgy, rough fringe.A quick alternative is to pull loose strands from your parting over the front of your face and smooth down.
  4. Liberally spray Redken Pure Force 20 all over, but focusing on the fringe, to hold firmly and create a wet look.
  5. Secure hair back on either side of head toward the top of the head with two pins to create slight lift and help to open up the face frame. Finish by spraying with Redken Pure Force 20

Paris Fashion Week | Isabel Marant AW16

“We decided to give the models at the Isabel Marant show three different hairstyles to better showcase their personalities. There’s a boyishness to Isabel’s clothes that is always apparent and the hair exemplifies this essence with a 50’s twist. Using Redken Guts 10 to help create these three unique looks, I interpreted a specific style from a different era and made it innocent, yet edgy and cool at the same time. This style is rich and doesn’t require a lot of hairspray.” – Guido

Look 1
  1. Starting with clean damp hair, apply Redken Satinwear 02 prepping blow-dry lotion to protect from heat and add shine. Blow dry hair straight until dry.
  2. Create a section of hair on the left side of head.
  3. Take half of the section and drape it up above eyes, twisting the hair as you pull it to create a loose circular shape. Secure with a pin placed just over the ear.

Look 2
  1. Starting with damp hair, apply Redken Guts 10 volume spray foam. Using a round brush, begin to blow dry hair in sections.
  2. Create one triangular section at the top of the head and blow dry in the opposite direction. Then pin section in a loose loop on top of head to set.
  3. With the remaining hair, pin in small loops throughout head. Depending on thickness of hair, create approximately three small loops at the front of the head and three in the back.
  4. Let each set for 10 to 15 minutes, then remove pins.
  5. Using fingers, take the front triangle section only and push toward back of head. Secure with several bobby pins for an asymmetrical look, keeping it slightly loose.
  6. In the back, create a messy French twist. Secure with pins, leaving the back a little baggy and soft.

Look 3

  3. With remaining hair, curl small sections of hair all over. Pin each curl in place and let set. Release pins after approximately 5-10 minutes.
  4. Gather one curled section on either side of the face and allow hair to follow jawline. Secure with pins in the back to create slight lift.

Paris Fashion Week | Lanvin AW16

Redken Global Creative Director Guido created a retro hairstyle with slight lift at the front and a deep side part at the Lanvin Fall/Winter 2016 show.

“This look goes hand in hand with the simple hair theme we’ve being seeing a lot this season. The hair is kind of boyish because it’s very simple and easy looking, yet it also has a retro feeling to it. We’re bringing back a hairstyle that was seen in the 80s which is natural-looking in the back yet has that retro feel in the front. I used Full Effect 04 at the forehead and at the sides to get that slight lift and create a feeling that it’s been pulled away at the side of the head.” – Guido

  1. Starting with damp hair, apply Redken Full Effect 04 volume spray mousse to roots to add slight lift and volume. Let hair air dry naturally.
  2. Once dry, create a deep side part and flip hair over to opposite side of head. Spray Redken Wind Blown 05 dry finishing spray to part and hairline for hold and texture.
  3. Using a 1-inch curling iron, create loose waves in the back to achieve a natural look.
  4. Using a round brush, briefly blow dry hair in the opposite direction of the section created in step 3.
  5. Taking a small section of hair at the front, gently pull to the opposite side of the head and loosely pin in place. Let set for 15 minutes.
  6. Release pins and flip section to the opposite side of head to create natural volume and separation.

Paris Fashion Week | Loewe AW16

Redken Global Creative Director Guido created a classic, low chignon at the Loewe Fall/Winter 2016 show.

“We created a sophisticated, chic style for Loewe this season. It’s a very classic look with a little bit of movement. I wanted to create a style that was clean and beautiful to complement the clothing. I applied Pillow Proof blow dry express treatment primer cream first, which protects the hair and helps achieve a nice hold. I followed with Satinwear 02 for a silky feeling, then blow-dried the hair and created a very low knot. I used Fashion work 12 hairspray to hold the chignon in place.” Guido

  1. Emulsify two pumps of Redken Pillow Proof blow dry express treatment primer cream in hands and smooth over damp hair.
  2. Follow with Redken Satin wear 02 prepping blow-dry lotion to create a silky texture and shine.
  3. Blow dry using a Mason Pearson brush, pulling back the hair but leaving slight volume.
  4. Use brush to push hair back softly on the sides. Spray Redken Fashion work 12 versatile working spray all-over for lasting hold.
  5. Gather hair into low ponytail and secure with an elastic.
  6. Twist ponytail into a low, clean chignon and secure with pins.

Paris Fashion Week | Christian Dior AW16

Redken Global Creative Director Guido created two low chignons to add a youthful, modern twist to a traditionally sophisticated look at the Christian Dior Fall/Winter 2016 show.

“This is an elegant, polished Dior woman but with a simple and young charm to her. The look has a bit of a nod to the 1920s but in an unconventional way, giving a more youthful feel to an ‘older’ hairstyle. The part is exaggerated and deep on one side; it’s not a classical part. A bun felt too matronly so instead, I created two small knots, almost like a double chignon. I used Guts 10 to add volume to the roots and Fashion Work 12 to hold the look in place.” – Guido

  1. Starting with damp hair, create a clean, deep side part on left side of head. Apply Redken Guts 10 volume spray foam to the hairline.
  2. Blow dry hair straight using a round brush.
  3. Create a clean middle section in the back and separate into two ponytails, one on either side of the head. Using fingers, comb through each ponytail to create a rich, easy look. Secure each ponytail with an elastic.
  4. Twist each ponytail into a tight, low knot, ensuring they are symmetrical on both sides of the head and situated directly beneath the ear. Secure each knot with pins.
  5. Spray Redken Fashion Work 12 hairspray for lasting hold.
  6. At the hairline on the right side, use a brush to gently loosen a small section of hair. Using fingers, push section backward to create slight lift and a matte, natural look.

You’ve decided on your hair, but what about finding the perfect party dress to wow at your Christmas party? Redken and Miss Selfridge have teamed up to bring you the best trend-driven looks for the party season. We’ve edited the ultimate going out dresses based around four of the biggest trends for AW15, and teamed them with the best catwalk-inspired hair styles for head-to-toe style perfection.

Studio 70s

The 70s trend isn’t going anywhere, and translating this into a party look works perfectly. A boho-cool maxi dress looks incredible teamed with killer platforms or over the knee boots. Look out for key details like lace up necklines, keyhole cut outs, bell sleeves and crochet overlays. If you really want to embrace the disco era, go all out by accessorising with faux fur stoles, crystal head chains, skinny sequin scarves and oversize hoop earrings.

GET THE 70s WAVES: Apply Pillow Proof Primer on wet hair and Full Effect 04 all-over nourishing mousse. Blow dry with a round brush. Once dry, take sections of the hair and spray with Iron Shape 11 thermal protecting spray and curl using straightening irons. Once curls are cool, shake curls out and finish with Fashion Work 12 versatile hairspray.

80s Glam

When it comes to unashamed glamour, the 80s nailed it – but for this season, it’s transformed into a more refined, sultry look. Bold but not over-the-top, the trend centres around a Bodycon silhouette, but with a whole host of details and added extras to keep the look fresh. Whether you prefer long sleeves, no sleeves, high necks or a scoop back, they all work with the sculpted stylings of a bodycon dress. To accessorise, keep your shoes pointy, your jewellery glitzy, and your feet firmly on the dancefloor.

GET THE 80s BLOWDRY: Apply Pillow Proof Primer on wet hair and Velvet Gelatine 07 cushioning blowdry gel. Blow dry hair straight using a flat brush.

Use Wax Blast 10 finishing spray wax to define shape.

Dark Victoriana

Another trend that’s proving it has staying power is Victoriana. It’s dark and beguiling but more feminine than goth – and if you love this style, you’ve got to start with a Little Black Dress. Lace, lace and more lace is key to this trend, shoeing flashes of skin through sheer sleeves and layers of chiffon.

You may be wearing black, but in fact you and your LBD, will look romantic and decidedly decadent – meaning you can keep accessories to a minimum (think cage sandals or pointed ankle boots) and let the dress do the talking

GET THE VICTORIANA UPDO: Apply Pillow Proof Primer on wet hair and Aerate 08 bodifying cream-mouse to mid-lengths and ends of hair. Blow dry using round brush. Once hair is dry, apply Rough Paste 12 working material,  roughly through mid-lengths and ends. Pull hair into ponytail on top of head and pull down 2 sections of the hair at the front. Wrap hair round into uneven bun, secure with grips at the base. Curl front sections of the hair using a straightening iron. Once cool, spray curls and bun with Quick Tease 15 backcombing finishing spray.

Embellished 2

C’mon, it’s Christmas – so when better to amp up the style and go wild with embellishment, Velvet, boucle, jacquard, sequins, faux fur, leather and fringing. This trend is the antithesis to the clean, minimal aesthetic that has dominated in recent years, and a Miss Selfridge has the perfect pieces to pick from. An embellished dress combines the fluidity of mesh and chiffon with the structure of beading and sequins, and is the centrepiece for this luxurious, tactile trend.  Don’t hold back when it comes to accessories either – layer on a cluster of rings, faux fur and sparkly shoes.

GET THE TEXTURED CURLS: Apply Diamond Oil Glow Dry on wet hair, blow dry the hair using a round brush. Curl hair using a large barrelled curling tong. Once hair is dry, finish with Quick Dry 18 instant finishing spray and Shine Flash 02 Glistening Mist.

New York Fashion Week | Marc Jacobs SS16

Mixing 40’s glam with downtown grunge, Redken Global Creative Director Guido sculpted a beautifully disheveled chignon for Marc Jacobs’ Spring/Summer 2016 runway show at the legendary Ziegfeld Theater.

marc jacobs 1

“The hair at Marc Jacobs has a bit of a 40’s feeling to it because of the shape and the wave in the front, but it feels very modern because of the texture, which I created using a combination of products to get a shiny, almost wet look. It’s almost like the girl did it herself in some ways – it’s very raw and young which gives it sort of a punk-y feeling as well. I applied Redken guts 10 to the roots of the hair to get that thick, almost undesirable texture, and then used my hands to create the disheveled, asymmetrical shape with bits of hair sticking out. I used a hair clip and Redken’s pure force 20 hairspray to hold the style, so in some ways its super feminine, but in a very downtown, modern way.” – Guido

  1. Liberally apply Redken guts 10 volumizing spray-foam section by section to damp hair, over-saturating the roots to create a lot of grip and texture.
  2. Blow dry hair with a diffuser.
  3. Use hands to loosely swoop hair across the forehead, and then pull back into a messy, asymmetrical chignon, securing with hair pins.
  4. Use Redken pure force super-strength finishing spray to mold hair into desired shape.
  5. Pull random pieces of hair out from the chignon and around the hairline, and then finish with another mist of Redken pure force super-strength finishing spray to add shine and hold the shape.
  6. Fasten desired clip or hair accessory to the chignon with hair pins.

New York Fashion Week | Alexander Wang SS16

To celebrate Alexander Wang’s 10th anniversary show, Redken Global Creative Director Guido enhanced each model’s individual personality with custom cuts, proving that there isn’t just one idea of beauty in today’s world.

alexander wang 1

“There’s really not one singular idea of beauty anymore, which is great and liberating. It’s all about bringing out your personality and adding little nuances here and there that really make a look feel more special and unique. Alex very much wanted to emphasize the realness – almost like the girls just walked off the street onto the runway in their own clothes.

Each girl is really being left as she is. I cut a lot of the girls’ hair, not all of them, but you really wouldn’t know because many of them are new and you might not even know what they like looked like before. Some of the girls got layers, or an extreme bang or fringe, all things that are a bit more masculine to bring out more of a boyish quality, which creates a super cool feeling overall. After the cut, I just emphasized each girl’s texture with Redken’s wind blown 05 – it gives it a little volume and texture and lifts the roots and a little natural, downtown feeling, which is very much the Alexander Wang girl. Although all of the looks are different, they all really go together and create a cohesive feeling on the runway.” Guido

  1. Start with clean hair by washing with Redken Frizz Dismiss Sulfate-Free Shampoo and Conditioner.
  2. Use fingers to create a natural part and then allow hair to air dry.
  3. Liberally spray Redken wind blown 05 dry finishing spray all over  to enhance your hair’s natural texture, until desired effect is achieved.

New York Fashion Week | Victoria Beckham SS16

Perfect for the everyday woman and the Victoria Beckham Spring/Sumer 2015 runway, Redken Global Creative Director Guido achieved a sophisticated, simple style full of glamour and shine.

victoria beckham 1

“Victoria is a very modern designer and she likes a very simple, easy sophisticated look. It’s very soft and pretty, but quite modern, without any specific references. First, I created a natural off-center part with my fingers so there’s an ease to it. Then, I blow-dried the hair with Redken’s satinwear 02 to get this great, smooth texture, and then twisted it back into a low bun, so that when you let it down it has this beautiful, natural movement with control around the head shape. Then, I just tucked the hair behind the ears and applied Redken’s new glow dry throughout the length to put a little bit of shine in the hair and get rid of any fly-aways. it’s a look that’s very easy for women to recreate themselves, which is what we’re seeing a lot on the runway in general and is very appealing for the everyday woman.” – Guido

  1. Spray Redken pillow proof blow dry express primer all over damp hair and comb through.
  2. Apply a nickel-size amount of Redken satinwear 02 prepping blow-dry lotion all over hair, focusing on the roots.
  3. Create an off-center part with fingers and then blow-dry hair smooth.
  4. Gather the length of the hair and twist into a loose, low chignon, securing with hair pins.
  5. Allow hair to set in the chignon for 30 minutes to 1 hour, and then let down.
  6. Apply 4 – 5 pumps of Redken glow dry style-enhancing blow-dry lotion throughout the length of the hair to add an instant shiny finish.
